Valentine's Day Cookies with Glaze Icing

Ahhh... Hearts painted red, and pink, and sprinkled with love!

Ok, you can't let Valentine's Day go by without having sugar cookie hearts, especially if you have kiddos!

Besides chocolate, decorated sugar cookie hearts have Valentines Day written all over them.

How can you resist?

So, if you haven't already made sugar cookies for Valentine's Day, you really must!

Gather the following:

  • Heart Cookie Cutter (or make your own out of cardstock)
  • Sugar Cookies (premade, store bought or homemade)
  • Sprinkles of all varieties
Then make:

 Sugar Cookie Glaze Icing
from allrecipes.com
Print Recipe

Ingredients1 C. confectioners’ sugar
2 tsp. milk plus for thinning as needed
2 tsp. light corn syrup
¼ tsp. almond extract
food coloring

Directions

Combine confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. (may have to add milk to make more smooth, but only do so in small increments or will become too runny)

Add corn syrup and almond extract.

Divide into bowls and add desired food coloring.

 And Enjoy!!!

My decorating and taste testers approve of making sugar cookies for Valentine's!

Sprinkles of Tips:

*Do this in steps! It will be much more enjoyable. So, make sugar cookie dough one day, refrigerate, then roll, cut, bake another day! Let cool, and decorate that day or another day, if you really plan ahead. But usually I bake and decorate same day.

*This Glaze Icing will harden but takes at least 8 hours. So I like to decorate them at night and let them sit out. For several reasons, a) so they have time to harden and b)so that little fingers aren't as likely to get in them :0)

*Freezing sugar cookie dough a few min. before baking will keep them from spreading so you still have your nice shape you cut out. So, cut out your shapes and pop them in the freezer a few minutes!

*When making icing start out with really thick, dry icing and then thin with milk or corn syrup to desired consistency.
-Use a thick honey for the icing that will be covering the design
-Use more of a runny nectar for adding designs such as dots that you want to blend in and be flat
-Use a thicker/stiffer icing for piping letters that you want to stick out

*Toothpicks work wonders when decorating cookies. Use to scrape off excess, if you have to start over, pop air bubbles, blend in designs, use to tie dye, marble, etc.

See those pretty little swirly hearts? So subtle, yet they are really hearts... made with a toothpick!
*Homemade cutter: And like I said if you don't have a heart cutter or the cutter you want, make your own, my style: use a cardstock or just regular paper draw and cut desired shape and cut around using a knife.

Get creative!

  3. Briarrose: Thank you! Simplified versions because they are for kids who will gobble them in two seconds!

Will Run for Health: Ummmm... yes, I am guilty! Hey, I am on a cookie kick and needed an excuse to make more cookies, in a shape different than a heart! And I will say your providers that receive your gifts truly are appreciative! Especially when they have 10 million little kids running around screaming and crying!
